Summer in january

january is a fresh start for the new year.
the last couple of days i have been reorganizing and cleaning out little areas in our home....i'm attacking one cupboard and one closet at a time.

i think the bug started with packing up christmas decorations.

i have quite a few things on my list for this new year and repainting pretty much every room in our house is where i am going to start.

this summer weather we are enjoying is definitely helping with my big plans!

thrifty finds

i hit a couple of estate sales and one thrift store late last week and found a couple of things that caught my eye.
 the fan cover...i don't know...yet
loved the color of this little stool.
i didn't really have anywhere in mind to put it,
but once i got home it found it's way straight to my sewing table.
i will probably have to make a nice comfy cushion...that thing is cold and super hard.
i'm a sucker for metal stands and i especially like this vintage circular shaped one.

i can never have too many wooden boxes.
the step stool...well, i just needed one.
the fish bowls will become terraniums
like this one.
the wine corks, well, these are just so many fun possiblities

is it thursday yet??

the reading nook

when i moved ella into julian's room and made the playroom,
i envisioned a play area that was a little more
open and user friendly
for the kids to play in.

since the move, there have been a couple of changes.
the reading nook has evolved just a bit.
the teepee has been packed away and more pillows have been added.
the space is comfy and a little bigger.
just recently, this space has really turned into a reading nook.
since starting first grade ella has really progressed with reading.  everyday she is reading more and more and i think she is even surprising herself.  i found her reading a book to julian the other day when i snapped these pictures.
you don't even know how happy that makes this mama.
i think the change in weather has also had a little to do with cozying up in this space.
unloading our new library books has been a big draw also.
i still want to make a nice thick mat like one i saw in my friend's house.

i really love this little nook...

mix and match - dining rooms

i have been making little mini makeovers in different parts of my house and as of late i have been wanting to do a little something different with our dining room...mostly with our dining room chairs.

our table was a thrifted find when we moved into our house.  it's a sturdy wooden table with clean lines and it works.  i like that it is pretty big and can easily seat six.  our chairs are wooden ikea chairs that are getting a little wobbly and need a little update.
i have a few ideas...
this whole room is perfect!
love the turquoise at the far end of the room.
we recently got a huge map and put it in the kid's room, but i think i might need to steal it back out to our living room...love the mix of these chairs.
 love this!!
love the light fixtures!

the new love-ly wall

I wanted to make a little something for a photo shoot I had this past weekend and I remembered this.

I thought it would be perfect.
I made it with some pipe cleaners and even added a little floral wire that I had on hand for a little more stability.
It still turned out a little too wonky to be held.
We didn't use it for the photo shoot but
I pinned it up in the kid's room
on the wall that has been blank for way too long
It's simple, but I like it.

 It will work for now!

milk & cookies

this summer has been going by way too fast.  ella will already be back to school in less than 2 weeks...that's right, less than 2 weeks.  we have been utilizing everyday like it was our last.  full days and late nights has left us all pretty exhausted.  julian usually falls asleep at some point way too late in the afternoon while he is in mid-sentence telling me he is NOT tired.  as much as i want this to be our endless summer, a little more routine will probably do us all some good.
"what are we doing today, mom?" is one of the first questions in the morning.  sometimes it even starts the night before to stall the whole going to bed routine.  either way it is popular one.  i remember asking that same question all summer long as a kid.
so what has filled our days?
*jumping and splashing around in the waves at the beach
*excusing ourselves at least two times during one movie as we make our way to the restroom during our weekly trips to the movies
*swimming, swimming and swimming a little more...ella is now quite the fish and julian is not too far behind
*wishing we had a small orchard of fruit trees to keep up with our mass consumption of fruit
*getting sick and vowing for myself that i will never go on another spinning ride again in my life
*laughing at our pictures that are shot on the last drop on the log ride
*family game nights
*sunscreen...applying...and reapplying
*the kids perfecting their swing at the many pinatas they have hit, followed by the dive to get as much candy as possible
*enjoying milk and cookies...these moments when we are able to slow down for just a bit are the times that make my day.  watching ella nibble like a little mouse and making her cookie last a good ten minutes will always amaze me.  i thought i was able to savor something delicious, but she takes it to a new level. julian, on the other hand, doesn't know the meaning of savor.  ahh, i love that these two can be so different.  sitting back and watching them makes my heart swell.  these moments make up for those times when they could argue over anything and everything.
see, the nibbler in action.
i love milk and cookies moments.

the playroom ::a tour

projects, projects and more projects.  i have my list and and it just keeps getting longer.  i thought that once summer came around I would have so much time to work on some projects...not so much.  we have been busy busy just about everyday, leaving little time to get anything done.
here is one project that is semi-done...or at least done for now.  the week that school was over i decided to move ella into julian's room and make ella's room the playroom.  both of the kid's were always asking to sleep in each other's room and i realized that if they are ever going to share a room it is now or never.  i'm not really sure how long they will be able to share a room but for now the nights of chatting and giggling are on.  it's so fun to hear them talking and talking.  i'm hoping this time of sharing rooms will be a special memory for them.  i remember sleeping on the floor in my brother's room all the time and i loved it.
this project helped me get a little more organized and some much needed cleaning was done.  it's not exactly how i want it to be yet, but this will do for now.
this is a little kitchen set andy made for ella a couple of christmas' ago.  julian now uses it just as much as ella.  the dishes are from ikea and the aprons are thrifted.

i had been wanting a little reading corner for them for a while and now they have one.  i set up ella's teepee in the corner and tried to make it comfy with lots of pillows.  there is usually a small quilt under the whole teepee, but it was in the wash at the time of these pictures.  apparently yoshi thought i set up that little corner just for her and got the quilt all full of hair,  ugh.
i love that there is a lot of light in this corner...perfect for reading!
here is a little thrifted shelf i found and spray painted.  i let ella pick out this crazy bright pink and i think it works.  this shelf holds a lot of littles.
i love this shelving unit.  we got it when ella was born to hold her clothes instead of a dresser.  i had a bunch of baskets and it worked nicely.  slowly books have taken over one shelf at a time, which i love.  changing this into the playroom allowed me to move a lot of their art supplies from a closet on the other end of the house and consolidate everything in this unit.  looking at this picture makes me want to organize the books a little to make it look a little cleaner.  i was also able to move puzzles and coloring books to a place where they are more accessible.  since moving things around you would think the kids got a lot of new toys...a little shuffle makes some toys so much more appealing.
that big teddy bear on the top was mine from when i was a kid.  my grandpa and grandma bought it for me for my tenth birthday while we were on vacation in big bear.  the bandit mask is an addition by ella.
this is a little collection of julian's cars...well, actually andy's but i assume one day they will be julian's.  the two little dolls are handmade by me from a while back.  the one with the red dress was made from a black apple pattern.  the little boots were andy's from when he was a kid.  they were a gift from his grandpa.
the bookcase was made by andy a long time ago for our first house.  i still love it.  we used it to hold julian's clothes in his room when he was born.  now it holds both of their clothes.  the table was also made by andy for our craft fair display.  it is a perfect table for our art projects.  the pictures are kind of just thrown up there on hooks that were there already.  i want to change that up a little with a couple of other big prints or paintings.
this was arranged a while back when it was ella's room.  the cross stitch picture of the little girl holding bird cages was thrifted.  the tray was as well.  the clipboards hold the ever changing art work.
this little corner also holds their desks to sit at and draw or whatever they feel like doing.  ella used her's here and there during the school year to do her homework at. both of the desks were thrifted at 2 different places.  the big boat is a kite we got while on a trip in bali.  it had been stored away in the garage.  i am hoping the kids are old enough now to be trusted to not mess it up.
i still want to make new curtains and rearrange a couple of things but that is the playroom for now.
it's a little cluttered, but i love looking around and seeing things that we have made and things that mean a lot to us displayed throughout our house.
i'm just happy it doesn't look like this anymore.
on to my next project.  actually this is andy's project that i am helping him with.
don't even ask.  i'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Home on the mind...

I love seeing inside people's homes.  I think this is part of why I love estate sales so much.  Not only is it a treasure hunt, it is also like a home tour.
Here are a couple of pictures from homes I like...
Brick walls alone are so pretty, but add a couple of mirrors and the hanging lights....
I want a bookcase around my bed like this.
I still need to find a place to make a cozy reading nook.
So I'm not the only girl tearing apart pallets and building something with it...only this wall is so amazing!
Katy from Mom and a Drill built this wall and she puts my poor planter boxes to shame.

Trays and Displays

I have been having some fun transforming boring walls in my house into happy little spaces. I can't remember where I got the idea, but metal trays make great magnetic boards to display and hang things. This is a wall in Ella's room. The needlepoint picture is from an estate sale. I love the little cage of birds on her head. Thinking about maybe painting the outside part of the frame a turquoise to kind of brighten it up a little. Loved the clipboard idea over on Smile and Wave and knew it would be the perfect way to hang so many lovely creations by Ella. She has really taken a liking to drawing and as her mama I can't help but think she is super talented. All of her drawings make me smile and wish I had more clipboards.

Remember these trays?
My little sewing corner is starting to feel like a little sewing can actually be done here. I still have my eye out for a small corner shelving unit to hold my sewing box and some other necessities.
I have no idea how I managed without my little sewing corner.
It makes me smile every time I look at it.
